Position Overview:
We are seeking a self-motivated and organized individual to join our Lab Operations team as a Temporary Laboratory Technician 2. In this role, you will be responsible for executing high-throughput greenhouse experiments, which include tasks such as planting, harvesting, and coordinating materials for greenhouse work. You will also process soil samples, prepare soil slurries, and subsample for various measurements, ensuring accuracy and precision in your work. Maintaining a clean and organized workspace is crucial, as is your ability to meet tight deliverable deadlines. The ideal candidate is not only detail-oriented and proficient in basic laboratory techniques, such as pipetting, but also possesses strong organizational and communication skills. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work closely with subject matter experts in agriculture, analytics, microbiome, and molecular biology, providing a valuable learning experience in a collaborative environment.
This is a temporary, seasonal position from September to December 2024, offering 35 to 40 hours of work per week, with potential for overtime during peak periods. We kindly ask that only candidates who currently reside within a commutable distance of Ames, IA apply for this opportunity.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Execute and manage greenhouse experiments, including planting, monitoring, and harvesting crops.
- Perform high-throughput processing of soil samples, including preparation, slurry creation, and subsampling for various analyses.
- Ensure compliance with all Trace Genomics safety protocols and company practices.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in the greenhouse and lab areas, including cleaning tools and workspaces after use.
- Accurately record data and maintain detailed logs of experiments and processes.
- Coordinate and manage inventory of materials needed for greenhouse and lab work.
- Assist in troubleshooting and optimizing experimental procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the lab operations team.
Qualifications:
- Requires the ability to drive yourself and others to the greenhouse from the local Ames laboratory.
- Demonstrated responsibility, punctuality, and reliability in previous roles.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Highly organized, with the ability to maintain a clean and efficient working environment.
- Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) meticulously.
- Basic understanding of life sciences, chemistry, or related fields, with college coursework in these areas preferred.
- Proficiency in pipetting and experience with general laboratory equipment is a plus.
- Previous experience in a lab setting or greenhouse environment is a plus.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Must have a current driver’s license, excellent driving record, and be insurable through the company policy.
- Must be able to lift and carry 25 to 50 lbs.
- Requires standing for extended periods, often in a noisy and physically demanding environment.
