Believer Meats is an innovative start-up revolutionizing the food industry through the development and commercialization of cultivated meat products. Leveraging cutting-edge biotechnology, we aim to provide sustainable, ethical, and high-quality meat alternatives to consumers worldwide. As we near completion of a new plant and prepare for commercialization, we are seeking Upstream Operations Technicians to join our team.
Summary of role and team:
The Upstream Operations Technician will support a broad range of upstream processing activities, including operating and maintaining bioreactors and other upstream processing equipment to ensure the efficient and safe production of cultivated meat. This role involves monitoring and controlling bioprocess parameters, performing routine maintenance, and troubleshooting equipment issues. The ideal candidate will have experience in bioprocessing, a strong attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety. This is a great opportunity to get exposure to a range of upstream operations. As the factory scales up, you will specialize in one or more of these functions based on your skills, capabilities, and interests.
Your day-to-day
Bioreactor Operation:
· Assist with commissioning and ongoing monitoring of bioreactors
· Adjust process parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and agitation to optimize cell growth and product yield.
· Perform regular sampling and analysis of bioreactor contents to ensure process control and product quality.
Equipment Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Sanitation:
· Perform routine maintenance and calibration of bioreactors and associated equipment.
· Troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues related to upstream processes.
· Maintain detailed records of equipment performance, maintenance, and repairs.
· Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of equipment and work areas to maintain a clean and safe production environment.
Process Monitoring and Documentation:
· Monitor critical process parameters and document all observations and adjustments.
· Maintain accurate and timely records of all production activities, including batch records, logbooks, and electronic data systems.
Media Preparation, Analysis, Harvesting:
· Prepare media components according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
· Perform routine analysis of media components, quality parameters, and final media products.
· Operate and maintain media harvesting equipment.
· Utilize analytical equipment and software to generate accurate results.
· Interpret analytical data and identify any deviations from specifications.
· Implement aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.

Quality Control and Compliance:
· Adhere to all company policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory requirements.
· Participate in quality assurance activities and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
· Ensure a clean and safe working environment in compliance with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and other relevant regulations.
Collaboration and Communication:
· Work closely with downstream processing, quality control, and R&D teams to ensure seamless production flow and product quality.
· Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to report any issues or deviations from standard processes.
Requirements
· Education: Associate's degree or certification in a relevant field.
· Experience: Ideally, 2+ years of experience in bioprocessing or a similar role, preferably in a food manufacturing, biotech, or pharmaceutical environment.
· Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating bioreactors and other upstream processing equipment. Familiarity with aseptic techniques and bioprocess control systems.
· Knowledge: Understanding of cell culture principles, bioprocess optimization, and GMP regulations.
· Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move equipment and materials up to50 pounds. Ability to work in a sterile environment and perform repetitive tasks.
· Authorized to work in the US and commute regularly to the work site.
