Ocean Aero is an award-winning US company that has created the world’s first and only environmentally powered Autonomous Underwater and Surface Vehicle (AUSV.) Ocean Aero’s autonomous marine robot, the Triton, operates exclusively on wind and solar energy and performs long endurance missions on the ocean surface with the ability to dive below the waves for underwater operations. The Triton uses a complex array of custom-built sensors, marinized electronics and software systems to operate, sense and communicate in the environment.

Role Description:

Ocean Aero Inc. is looking for an experienced Senior electrical assembly technician to join our team as we ramp-up the build of our new range of unique marine robotics vehicles. The Senior electrical assembly technician will be responsible for assembling and troubleshooting electronics, electrical components, and sub-assemblies of the Triton AUSV. This will include advanced soldering, preparing cables, building cable harness assemblies, potting assemblies, testing assemblies, and installing assemblies into the vehicles.

The Senior electrical assembly technician will assist the group manager in leading the assembly and integration team as well as coordinate closely with the engineering, supply chain, field application/test and fabrication teams. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, motivated team player with a genuine interest in marine robotics and electro-mechanical systems. Experience with soldering, cable harnesses assemblies and potting are required.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, test, and install mechanical and electrical assemblies.
  • Troubleshoot and test printed circuit boards, sensor systems and motor controllers
  • Use various assembly and testing tools to build sub-systems based on instructions.
  • Install sub-systems into vehicle.
  • Follow established assembly instructions and interface with engineers to provide feedback on improvements
  • Read and interpret mechanical and electrical engineering drawings and schematics
  • Develop and generate job guides / work instructions
  • Assist with supervision, and training of technicians.
  • Assist with inventory management
  • Assist with procurement
  • Maintain a clean work area and is responsible for designated tools
  • Use EAGLE software to interpret PCB schematics and BOM’s
  • Strip, prep, and clean underwater cables
  • Solder wires to PCB
  • Crimp electrical connections and install connectors to modules
  • Wire-to-wire splicing
  • Terminate and crimp RF connections
  • Pot electrical assemblies in epoxy or polyurethane
  • Use existing testing scripts to QC assemblies
  • Maintain a clean work area and is responsible for designated tools

Role Requirements:

  • IPC or NASA solder certification
  • Broad technical experience with software, mechanical, and electronics systems
  • Deep mechanical assembly skills
  • Ability to work closely and build relationships with engineering teams and management
  • Ability to work independently and be an effective team player
  • Must have good eyesight, including depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to differentiate between colors
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • HS Diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of work experience and education
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English with excellent understanding
  • Ability to handle active work including lifting, bending, walking, and standing for considerable lengths of time
  • US Government position. US Citizenship required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance

Role Preferences:

  • Strong hand-on skills with experience using a wide range of tools and production equipment
  • Capable of assembling electronic components and perform hand solder or surface mount component reflowing
  • Strong supervisory skills and experience
  • Experience with cable splices, epoxy/polyurethane potting materials, submersible electronics
  • Experience with motor control, and feedback.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of technical principles relating to Electrical/Mechanical/Software Engineering
  • Experience using EAGLE software to interpret PCB schematics and BOM’s
  • Experience using Molex crimp tools
  • General mechanical assembly skills
  • General interest in marine robotics and systems
