ReelData is a startup that brings AI disruption to the aquaculture industry. The core of our technology is backed by deep learning and machine learning algorithms that allow fish farms to reduce the intrusiveness and resources needed to understand various metrics around their fish. We aim to help the industry operate at maximum profitability and sustainability.

As a Controller with ReelData you will own many of the financial processes from transactions to financial statement preparation to coordinating the annual budget process. This is a part-time position with approximately 3-4 days at the office in downtown Halifax. The Controller needs to be a business partner across departments, enabling communication and translation of financial and non-financial information throughout the team. Reporting to the CFO, the ideal candidate is a well-rounded individual with experience in various aspects of accounting and is eager to grow professionally.

Main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1 Financial reporting and budgeting

  • Deliver accurate and timely financial statements compliant with ASPE
  • Includes preparation of all underlying working papers
  • Create and maintain documented accounting policies
  • Support annual financial statement review or audit
  • Execution of budget process across departments
  • Reporting for grants and assisting with applications for grants
  • Other external and internal reporting

2 Transactions

  • Entry and management of AR and AP including employee expense reimbursement and initiating wire and EFT payments
  • Work with non-accounting functions on developing and maintaining a system for managing inventory and costing
  • Partner effectively with non-accounting functions to drive process enhancement and education regarding finance and accounting
  • GL maintenance

3 Regulatory

  • Ensure compliance with indirect tax legislation and file returns for the same
  • Support income tax filings (T2, SRED)

4 Other

  • Manage IT licenses/subscriptions
  • Office responsibilities including purchasing snacks, supplies, and equipment
  • Travel bookings

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Degree, preferably with a major in accounting or finance
  • At least 3 years of previous experience in a similar role
  • Working knowledge or exposure to IFRS or US GAAP environments is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and dedication to accuracy
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite
